In April, Year 6 student Luca Geue travelled to Melbourne to represent Holy Trinity Lutheran College in the School Sport Victoria State Swimming Championships. It was a long road to reach the state championships—first competing in the college’s Swimming Carnival in the beginning of the year and then progressing though the local and regional levels to reach the state competition.
Luca competed in his two favourite swimming strokes—Butterfly and Freestyle—placing first for Butterfly and second for Freestyle. Not only did he get medals for his effort, he also achieved personal bests (31.92 seconds for Butterfly, 28.9 seconds for Freestyle) in each race. He was also lucky enough to be presented his medal by Mack Horton—Australian Olympic gold medallist, World Championships medallist, and Commonwealth Games medallist.
Luca loves to swim and began swimming competitively at the age of seven. Once a week Luca makes the long trip to Ballarat to swim with his club, the Ballarat Gold Swimming Club. He trains on his own for the rest of the week, doing a mixture of dry land and pool based training. Pool sessions cover a minimum of 6 km in the water per session.
The next level of competition after state is the National Titles, but unfortunately Luca won’t be able to compete until he’s 13 years old. He has reached the top of his field for his age, but he will continue to train and to work towards National Titles when he is old enough.
