- Venue: Adam Goodes AFLX Competition
A great day out was had by our Year 9/10 boys Friday, debuting our new footy jumpers in an inaugral interschool Adam Goodes AFLX competition.
Despite the opposition teams having many more players, enabling them to be able to rotate their entire midfield at 5 minute intervals, and our boys suffering some early key injuries and barely having any rotations, they managed to dig deep in their last game and hang on for an extremely gutsy draw against Murtoa College.
This was a great sign of their character as they could’ve easily gone through the motions after earlier loses to Edenhope and Warracknabeal meant they were unable to win the competition.
We were very lucky to pick up Corey Smith, a new enrolment to HTLC only days before. Corey played a great game reading the play and making great saves on the last lines of defence. Cooper Walter was often his partner in crime, while further afield Dyson Parish provided a strong target and busted open many a pack. Levi Mock and Shane Wouters were clever up forward, Angus Fischer played whatever role was asked of him and Sam Hobbs, Jackson Price and Jordan Friberg (Year 8 student helping out due to a clash with another school event ruled out several Year 9/10 boys), provided relentless gut running and pressure, particularly noteworthy given they were the main ones opposed to the opposition’s ‘fresh’ midfields.
The AFL Victoria Medal for best afield will be awarded to Jackson Price later in the week, but all of the boys deserve accolades for the spirit they displayed towards each other and in representing the college’s new jumper.
