Greetings, and a happy long weekend to the members of HTLC.

Last week I made mention to families that World Teacher’s Day was scheduled to occur today, Friday 23 October. Unfortunately, this was incorrect with the day planned for this coming Friday 30 October. I must apologise for this error but once again encourage families to acknowledge and recognise our teachers for their dedicated service and support to our students. Regardless of the occasion, your support and encouragement of our teachers and staff is always greatly appreciated.

With the Melbourne Cup only a little over a week away I make note that the college will only be closed on the day of the public holiday (Tuesday 3 November), with school open as usual for the remaining days of that week. We have been informed that buses will also continue as normal during that week.

As we come to the final term of the year, members of our community may or may not know that at the end of this year Pastor Gus will be stepping down as our College Pastor—looking to reduce his work hours. I give thanks for Pastor Gus and his contribution and dedication to our college community. He has been a wonderful spiritual leader in our college and he will be missed. With this pending vacancy, a Call Committee has been established to find our next pastor for the school. One part of this process is to ask for nominations from our community, inviting you to nominate any Lutheran Pastor that you may know of who you would consider suitable for the role at our college. Any Lutheran Pastors nominated by our community will be included for careful and prayerful consideration. Should you be led to make a nomination, please note the Pastor’s name and location and current area of service. Your nomination can be made by calling Main Reception or via email (admin@htlc.vic.edu.au). Any support from our community at this point in time would be greatly appreciated.

I once again remind members of our community that if a student or family member is unwell, they must not attend the college and seek medical advice. Additionally, during grass pollen season between October and December, there is an increased risk of seasonal asthma, hay fever and epidemic thunderstorm asthma. It’s more important than ever for staff and students to manage any hay fever or asthma symptoms, as these conditions can produce symptoms that are similar to COVID-19 such as runny nose, cough or shortness of breath. The best way to reduce and prevent symptoms of asthma or hay fever, and reduce unnecessary absences from school, is to follow an up-to-date asthma action plan or hay fever treatment plan. I encourage those affected by asthma or hay fever to visit the doctor for further advice.

Valuing our community
I thank God for a week of ‘normality’ with all our students now back on site. It has really lifted my spirits, and I am sure it has given joy to us all. Even so, the transition back to school is not all easy going. Because there has been such a gap of our being apart from each other through the time in remote learning, we may be anxious about stepping back into what was for us. We can never really get back to how things were for us. I think we are all beginning to learn that.

How good it has been to move around the campus and see our students engaging with each other, and with the teachers who care for them. To see the fun and banter that is a natural part of healthy inter-personal relationships. Growth and development do not just happen within the context of the classroom. It happens when people are together and are getting along well together.

Being in community, in fellowship with one another is God’s desire and design for us. Jesus tells us: 'As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples (followers), if you love one another' (John 13:35–36). The way we look out for each other and care for each other sets us apart as a special people—the people of God. This is especially true in challenging and difficult circumstances.

Know that God loves you and you are precious to him. Know that you belong to this community and you are a valued part of it. Know that there are people to lean on when you may be struggling. Know that you have the capacity to serve others in their need. In this way we will bring healing and hope to our community. Every blessing, as together we move forward.

Father God, we thank you for the community that we are a part of here at Holy Trinity. Please be with us and bless us all as we transition back into being on campus. Help us to welcome your presence and to live knowing that you are with us. Open our eyes to where others are at, and help us to be ready to serve them for their good. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Footy Day and pie lunch
Yesterday our Junior School had a buzzing sense of excitement as students arrived for Footy Day, one of the few ‘special days’ we have been able to have this year. The oval was a sea of footy colours and blaring team anthems as students engaged in AFL match play and skills development activities in small groups throughout the day. Our Year 6 students did an amazing job of leading the activities! Thank you to Mrs McDonald, Mr Taber, Mrs North and Mrs Taber for preparing the activities, and to our VCAL staff and students for organising the pies for lunch.

Foundation 2021 Story Time session
Next Tuesday our 2021 Foundation students will be engaging in their second remote Story Time session as part of their transition program. Foundation teachers have prepared videos with a reading of Koala Lou by Mem Fox, explaining how to make a koala puppet, and providing with a virtual tour of our college library.

World Teacher’s Day
On Friday 30 October we will be recognising World Teacher's Day. Here at HTLC we are blessed to have passionate, caring and committed teachers and staff, who strive daily to provide engaging and relevant learning experiences for students and support them during their time here at HTLC. I would like to thank the PTFA who have acknowledged this special day and expressed gratitude to our staff with a small gift for all staff members.

End of year celebrations
Planning and preparations are currently underway for our end of year celebrations (Foundation Celebration Night, Graduations, Closing Service) to make adjustments in line with COVID safe requirements. At this stage, large groups may not congregate and parents are not permitted on site. As a result these celebrations will be delivered virtually. More information about specific events will be shared in coming weeks.

This week’s chapel was presented by the 5G class, based on the Bible story of the birth of Isacc found in Genesis 21:1-3. Isaac was born to Abraham and Sara in answer to their prayer for a child. In his message, Pastor Gus reminded us that God created each one of us for a purpose, such as Isaac who grew up to be a leader of God’s people in Israel.

Term 4 update
With week 3 of term coming to an end, I am pleased to report that students and staff are adjusting well to being back on-site for face to face learning. Teaching staff have invested heavily into helping the students to reacquaint themselves with the normal routine of a school day. As the term progresses, the focus will continue to be on providing students with learning opportunities across the broad range of Middle School subjects. There is a definite sense of appreciation for being back in the classroom as students and staff embrace the opportunity to teach and learn in a face to face environment.

Assessment and reporting
Assessment and reporting will follow similar guidelines from Semester 1 with students being acknowledged for what they achieved during remote learning. Final reports will again be modified to cater for the percentage of learning that took place during remote learning. Formal examinations will not be issued for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Teaching staff have the option of setting an end of unit test but these will not be issued under formal exam conditions.

Homework Club
As a way of supporting students as they adjust back to on-site learning, Homework Club will be operating on Monday and Wednesday nights. Students are welcome to attend from 3:30-4:30pm in MGLA1 of the Middle School.

Thank You Day
Today was a public holiday to show gratitude to Victorians for making sacrifices to help contain the spread of coronavirus. Middle and Senior school students celebrated the early end to the week with a casual dress day (with a footy colours theme). It was fantastic to see so many Richmond colours floating around the Middle School—predominantly from the staff! Good luck to both teams on the weekend (but especially to the Mighty Tigers!).

Final day for Year 12s
Next Friday morning, Year 12 students will enjoy a breakfast prepared for them by staff and students. Following breakfast, a recording of their final Chapel, led by the Year 12 students with the assistance of Mr Polack, will be viewed by all classes throughout the school. This will also be made available to parents at this time. They will then depart from the college to spend a day together reflecting on relationships that have been established during their years of schooling at Holy Trinity and the exciting pathways and opportunities that lay ahead.

College Captains
All students have the capacity and ability to develop their leadership skills and each is a leader in some way, regardless of their ability to stand in front and share their vision. Leadership is nurtured throughout the college and our Captains assume an important responsibility in their roles. They are ambassadors who support the values of the college and play an active role in all aspects of the community, working with those around them to achieve positive outcomes. Our College Captain positions for 2021 are currently open and students are encouraged to consider the gifts they have to bring to such a position.

West Vic Fed Uni Academy of Sport
Holy Trinity Lutheran College is pleased to partner with FedUni WestVic Academy of Sport. We have collaborated with the intention of supporting our students who excel in their field of sport at district, regional, state or national level and who aspire to improve their level of performance. In partnering with FedUni WestVic Academy, we are aiming to offer a unique opportunity that will complement existing training programs, and that may not have otherwise been accessible to our students. Admission to the program provides successful applicants with the following services throughout the year:
  • musculoskeletal screening—conducted by an Exercise Physiologist
  • sports physiotherapy lecture—injury prevention and management
  • individual strength and conditioning program—developed by Strength and Conditioning Coach and reviewed during the year
  • participation in high performance training day
  • theoretical and practical training and development sessions
  • diet and nutrition presentation
  • foot and ankle injury clinic
  • Victorian Institute of Sport tour (Melbourne).
Applications for entry to our 2021 Specialist Sport Program are now open. Forms should be submitted to Main Reception by Friday 30 October.

VCAL attendance
VCAL students have staggered completion dates according to their cohort and their demonstration of required units of competency. Year 12 students attend their final day on 30 October (if all work has been submitted). Year 10 and Year 11 students continue classes on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays until Friday 4 December. No classes will run for these students on Wednesdays when their VET course finishes. Structured Work Placements may continue on Thursdays at the discretion of the employer and as arranged with parents. The school should be notified of these arrangements.
Students seeking to leave school prior to the conclusion of programs should apply in writing to the Principal for an exemption. The Education Act requires young people under the age of 17 to be in full-time employment or education or a combination of employment and training.

Junior School Sport

Footy Day
A huge thank you to all Year 6s for their assistance in coaching the Footy Day activities, you did an amazing job! Also a huge thank you to staff for their assistance on the day and to the Year 9s for organising the footy pies for lunch. It was great to see the day run so smoothly with beautiful weather and a fantastic atmosphere from the students participating. Everyone had a wonderful time.

Athletics Days
Year 3–6 Athletics Day
We are planning to run our Year 3 to 6 Athletics Day over a 3 week period. This will occur during scheduled sports times on Friday afternoons. Period 3 and 4 for Year 3/4 and Periods 5 and 6 for Year 5/6. We are planning to begin this in Week 5 (Friday 6 November).

Year 3–6 students will be competing in the following events Friday 6 November:
  • High Jump
  • Triple Jump
  • Sack Race
  • Long Jump
Foundation– Year 2 Athletics Day
Foundation to Year 2 Athletics Day will be an alternative day compared to our normal athletics day. It will consist of a sprint event and novelty team relays (sack race, potato race, baton relay) for Foundation students with some more structured events (sprint, baton relay, long jump and a throw event) for Year 2 students. The date has been set for Week 5, Wednesday 4 November.

On these days students will be able to wear their house coloured clothes for the day and are encouraged to bring a drink to take to each event with them.

Unfortunately we will not be allowing parent spectators to attend. We will do our best to capture as many movements and upload them to our social media pages.

Foundation–Year 2 swimming
With the government restrictions easing, we have been in contact with the YMCA and are organising how our Foundation to Year 2 swimming program will look for this term. Once confirmed we will forward further information on this event.

Message from College Chaplain, Mrs Alice Lamb
I hope everybody is enjoying the football season. I had the pleasure of watching the students on the oval in the nice weather on Thursday, there was a pleasant atmosphere, the students and staff were enjoying themselves. It was nice to see after the year that has been.

Next week I will start attending Year 4-5 classes to talk about friendship. Healthy friendships, understanding different personalities and managing conflict will be discussed and, of course, respecting and being kind to each other. The Year 1s have also discussed 'personal space bubbles' with me. This learning was about respecting each others' space. In the Senior School I am arranging talking to classes about anxiety.

SchoolTV: Exam jitters
Every year, more and more emphasis is placed on achieving good results in exams causing many students to feel extraordinary pressure and having unrealistic expectations. This month on SchoolTV, parents will find advice on how to help students cope with the pressure and how students can work smarter to achieve the results they desire. Exams are like a game. Once you know how to play the game, your chances of achieving great results rapidly increase. Parents can learn how to assist their kids to maintain perspective and keep their sanity intact during exam time. Diet, exercise and sleep all play an important part in helping a student balance a busy schedule and study smarter. Keeping stress levels to a minimum and reducing anxiety can be easily achieved through careful planning and having a supportive environment.

Wellbeing support
Use the form below to contact the Wellbeing Team (which includes the Provisional Psychologist, Chaplain and Pastor). Once the form has been received, your inquiry will be discussed within the Wellbeing Team. A follow-up phone call will be made to provide consultation about your inquiry and determine an appropriate course of action. This may result in a referral to outside professionals. Please note the College Principal may be informed of your inquiry as necessary. Responses will be within 48 hours. If it is an urgent matter, please contact the College Principal or Head of School.

Year 11 and 12 photos
Year 11 and 12 photos only will be taken by Leading Image on Tuesday 27 October. Students are required to wear formal summer uniform We are currently finalising a date for school photos for other year levels, and will provide information once it has been confirmed.

Bus fees
There will be no fees charged for Term 4 bus travel. Bus travellers will now be required to pay for travel one term in advance. Term 1 2021 invoices will be issued this term with payment due prior to the commencement of the term. If payment isn't made, the spot on the bus will be reallocated.
Bookclub brochures (Issue #7) have been distributed. All orders should be placed by Wednesday, 28th October. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Scholastic Australia’. Credit card payments may also be made using the online system, the LOOP. By indicating ‘gift’ on your online order, the books will be kept at school for you to pick up if you don’t want your child to see your purchase. Trading second-hand school items
Thanks to the PTFA, second-hand school items can be traded through the Sustainable School Shop website. This website is a one-stop-shop to buy and sell second-hand uniforms and textbooks year round. The PTFA is providing this service so there is no cost for families—each family that registers on the Sustainable School Shop will be given a subscription.
