2025 Staffing Update

I am excited to announce the following staffing appointments for 2025:

• Mrs Kristen Pfitzner: Kristen is an experienced English and Languages teacher who has also held a number of Leadership positions including Year Level Coordinator. She is a committed and passionate teacher who has innovative ideas and will be a valuable addition to our college from 2025 onwards.
• Mr Joel Beggs: Joel is an experienced and expert senior mathematics teacher who has also held senior leadership positions in his previous school. He will head up the mathematics department, teaching methods but is also excited about teaching 7-10 Mathematics, including the Genesis Program. Joel has also had experience with timetabling and is looking forward to working in this space in 2025.
• Mr Ryan Metelmann: Ryan is a well-credentialled Health, PE and Mathematics teacher who joins our college after building a strong reputation at his previous school. An intelligent and caring teacher who establishes strong relationships with his students, Ryan will bring calmness and control to his classroom and relationships and will have an immediate impact next year.

I look forward to formally welcoming these teachers to HTLC in the coming weeks and can’t wait to see what positive impact they have on our college from 2025 onwards. I also look forward to making more exciting staffing announcements before the end of the school year.

2025 Fee Schedule

Last Friday information regarding the 2025 Fee Schedule was sent out to parents. This year, the fee schedule is one fee which includes; tuition fees, composite fees and the camp fee. Previously there have been 3 separate fees which have appeared on the fee schedule. The increase in school fees for next year will be 3.7% which has been included for each year level. This 3.7% increase has been averaged out across the year levels. If you have any questions regarding next year's fees, please contact the College.

College Board

This week the College Board met for the final time this year with the main items of business including an amalgamation update, draft approval of the 2025 Budget, Principal Action Plan report and an acknowledgement and recognition that this will be the final time that the Board of Holy Trinity Lutheran College will meet as a new WLC Board will be in place for the beginning of next year. This was an emotional time as we said thank you and farewell to a group of volunteers who have served the HTLC Community for a long period of time. Kerrie Pietsch for example has served on the Board for 15 years and Bryan Matuschka has been the Chair for 7 years. A letter or recognition and gift was presented to each Board member to acknowledge their service. The Board wishes to pass on their sincere gratitude and thanks for the work that the staff have done this year and is so appreciative of all that they do to make this school the place it is. They are also appreciative of the support the families of HTLC continue to provide the college and they look forward to following the college as it amalgamates into Wimmera Lutheran College in 2025.

Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity (Psalm 93:2).

This short psalm is so full and rich! Can you hear the sounds, watch what is happening and join in the worship of the living Lord? Declaration after declaration. No matter what happens in our earthly realm and the plans and schemes of the evil one, the world and our fallen nature, the Lord reigns! Eternally!

In and through Jesus, the Lord comes to us:

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life … no-one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no-one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one (John 10:27–30).

Cupped and secure in his hands.

Sheep need leading; otherwise, they can easily end up in BIG trouble! But in following their Shepherd, they can be led to green pastures, places of rest and restoration, healing and transformation (Psalm 23). That’s what the Lord who reigns is like, revealed to us by the Spirit in and through Jesus. He desires a deepening relationship with us. He desires his self-giving love to flow through us to a hurting world, even one person at a time.

As the Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:22,23:

And God placed all things under the feet of [Christ Jesus] and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, and fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Gentleness, majesty and authority – all in One!

We bless you, Lord God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work in us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20,21).

Learning Support in 2025

In 2025, we are pleased to announce that Mrs Lynette Morrow will be continuing her position as Learning Support coordinator. Lynette continues to oversee the diverse range of learning needs our students have. Practically, she is there to support parents in their conversations with staff, as well as supporting staff as we work as a team to meet the needs of our student population.

Alongside Lynette, we have Mrs Kristy Altmann who will be overseeing the NCCD (Nationally Consistent Collection of Data) at school. Both of these ladies have had considerable experience at Holy Trinity in the Junior School, and I look forward to the way we have organised 2025 to further utilise their gifts and talents.

December 3 - Set for Transition Day

Class lists will be distributed to students in a sealed envelope on Monday, 2 December. Please remember that teachers are very careful and deliberate in their allocation of students to classes and many factors are taken into account when preparing class lists. The whole school Transition Day will occur on Tuesday, 3 December. Class lists for Foundation 2025 will be distributed on this day, once students have moved to classrooms.

December 5 - PTFA Christmas Stall

On Thursday, 5 December the PTFA Christmas Stall will be held. Gifts for the whole family will be available ranging in price from $0.50c and $5.00. If students would like to purchase a gift, please arrange money for them to bring to school on the day! Thanks to the PTFA who make an affordable option for gift-giving!

December 5 - Foundation Celebration Night

This night is a special night for the Foundation students and their parents to celebrate their first year of school. We ask that siblings, if possible, don’t attend. But if you can’t get a babysitter, we understand and you may bring your children along (however, you will be responsible for any other children attending). Grandparents and special friends are also welcome to join us. If your child has words to learn, please continue to practise these with your child so that they know them off by heart. Thank you for your help.

December 6 - SRC Visit to K-Mart Wishing Tree

On 9am - 11.30am, the SRC will take a field trip to purchase goods and leave them under the wishing tree at K-Mart. Thank you to the whole school community who have contributed to our school’s donation! Just a reminder that the Year 3-6 SRC representatives all need to wear HTLC sports uniform. Parental advice has been sent through Consent2Go.

December 6 - Junior School Captain Speeches

In the afternoon of Friday in Week 9, some of our current Year 5 students will deliver their final pitch for school captain. Congratulations to the students who have made the shortlist for these positions. At HTLC, we believe that our student leadership is just as important as any other leadership in our school, so we look forward to finding out the students we will be working closely with. I also look forward to working with the total Year cohort as a group as they all step into being official leaders of the school, by virtue that they will be the oldest students in the school!

December 11 - Closing Services Week 10

A reminder that at HTLC we have two closing services:

• Year 3-6: 11.30am - 12.45pm
• Years F-2: 1.45pm - 2.30pm

All parents are invited to attend! Awards will be presented to students during the Year 3-6 service with all recipients congratulated for outstanding achievements across different roles and curriculum areas. Our 2025 Junior School Captains will also be announced at this service.

As we near the end of another busy year, I thank all of the students, staff, parents and wider community here at Holy Trinity, as you are the people that I love to come to work for. We are a college that dispenses education, but as a community we are so much more! Christmas blessings to everyone and I pray for safe travel over the Christmas break!

To those families departing for the last time, thank you for being a part of our community. We will be forever grateful that you have been a part of the college and hope our paths cross again in the future. We’re confident we’ll see many of you around the wider Horsham community—please don’t hesitate to stop and say hello!

It is a wonderful time of celebration in the Secondary School are we recognise our students and their achievements. We have many exciting activities planned for the final weeks of the term.

Year 12 Graduation Service

On Friday 22 November, we farewelled our Year 12 students with a heartfelt Graduation Service followed by the Graduation Dinner. This special day celebrated their journey and acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the past year. It was also a meaningful opportunity for students and their families to connect with staff one last time. A sincere thank you to all staff members who contributed to making these events so memorable.

Senior School Closing Service

Thursday 28 November marked the final day of school for our Year 10 and 11 students. This milestone was celebrated with the Senior School Closing Service, featuring a wonderful performance by our Secondary School Vocal Group, The Glassbreakers. During the service, we also acknowledged our incoming 2025 School Captains, presented subject awards, and gave thanks to God for a fulfilling year together. We are looking forward to celebrating with our Middle School students at their Closing Service on Tuesday 10 December at 11.30am.

Transition Day

We are excited to welcome the Year 7 students for 2025 to our Transition Day on Tuesday 3 December. There is an exciting program planned for the day and we hope it will give students a taste of the opportunities and experiences that await them next year.

State Year 6 Volleyball

Last week, eight students in Year 6 travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Primary State Volleyball Finals - the last representative sporting event on offer for students in 2024. For the girls to have made it to be one of the best eight teams in the state, considering most of the volleyball players in the team have less than 12 months experience, was a huge achievement to begin with.

The girls’ first match was against Ivanhoe Grammar School, and after losing the first set, they fought back with some strong serving to claim the second set. Unfortunately, the Ivanhoe serves were too strong and HTLC lost their opening game 1-2.

As the day went on, the conditions inside the stadium became even warmer, and it was a challenge for the girls to continue to compete at a high level. We were required to play the final two pool games back-to-back, and a combination of the heat and some powerful overarm serves from the opposition teams meant the girls were unable to win any more sets throughout the day.

All of the girls worked hard and played their best, with some good rallies on display throughout the day. Reaching the State Finals is a promising step forwards for the HTLC volleyball program, and hopefully it is something we can continue to build on in 2025 and beyond.

Congratulations to Luella B, Everleigh C, Penny E, Mahli H, Sasha H, Charlotte K, Aizla S, Ane vZ and Becky W for qualifying for the event, and thanks to Bree Hawken for travelling with the students and scoring on the day.

Uniform Returns

With the last of the representative events for the year having taken place, all HTLC representative uniforms must now be returned to the College. Students should bring their washed uniforms to school and place them in the uniform returns basket outside the Library.

2025 Calendar Dates

With the end of 2024 almost upon us, planning has begun for the 2025 sporting year at Holy Trinity. We have confirmed dates for the Year 4 - 6 and Year 7 - 12 Swimming Carnivals, being February 20 and February 21 respectively. More information regarding these events, including event nomination forms, will be distributed in the new year.

HTLC’s Year 7 - 12 Athletics Carnival will take place on Monday, 31 March at Dudley Cornell Park. The F - 2 and Year 3 - 6 Athletics events are still awaiting confirmation, but are currently scheduled for March 27 & 28.

If Cross Country is run as a whole College event in 2025, it has been tentatively scheduled for April 22, the first day back for Term 2. More information about this (including confirmation of the date) will be published next year.

Excitement is growing as we count down both to the end of the school year and Christmas Day. Invariably Christmas is a busy time as we plan get-togethers and meals with friends and family, as well as holidays and other activities.

The tradition of using Advent Calendars to count down the days until Christmas is a long-held tradition in the Christian faith-life. It is one way of purposefully drawing attention each day towards Jesus, his birth and why our heavenly Father God chose to send him to us. I pray using this Advent Calendar will be a peaceful, joyful and meaningful pause for you and your family each day amongst all of the other fun, excitement and business. May you find fresh insight into the depth and beauty of the Christmas story and the love of God.

An Advent Encounter 24 Day Free Devotional

Even in homes where getting by is a bit of a struggle, Christmas is generally a time of indulgence for most families. We might be fighting inflation, increased rent and mortgage payments, and rising fuel and food costs, but it’s Christmas! We want to make it memorable, and spending seems to be the default to make that happen.

Yet, at the same time that we spoil ourselves and our loved ones, we often bemoan the ingratitude of our children. We feel that they’re spoiled. We wish they’d look beyond themselves and stop making Christmas all about “me, me, me.” And apart from that, it’s expensive!

With this in mind, here are 10 tips for “unspoiling” your children this Christmas.

First, focus on others!

1. Focus on Service

This year, one family I know is baking cookies and visiting the local police station, ambulance station, and fire station to drop off some Christmas cheer. They take the time to thank the people who work to keep us safe. Others I know visit the local RSPCA with supplies or donations, drop food, books, and toys at a women’s shelter, or donate food (or money for a well) to one of the many overseas charities that help those who are impoverished and in need.

2. Focus on Your Neighbourhood

Who are the people in your neighbourhood? Perhaps an elderly widow could do with a hand in her yard. ‘Tis the season for fast-growing grass and gardens. Perhaps someone has just gone through a tough separation and could do with a Christmas basket to ease the pain (financial and emotional) that Christmas might bring.

One of our favourite things to do is to host a neighbourhood Christmas party. We invite all of our neighbours for a barbecue and to sing carols. Every year, we are asked for the date in advance, so people can be available!

3. Try a Secret Santa Drop

Our children’s favourite Christmas activity is playing “knock and run.” We select a handful of people we want to give something to each year. It might be a teacher, a friend, a coach, or a church leader. We wrap their parcels (often home-made treats), write thank you cards, and drive to their home. After parking out of sight, we sneak to their door, place their gift on the doorstep, and bang on the door before sprinting for a hiding place. Then we watch with delight as someone gets an unexpected, anonymous Christmas surprise. (It can be hard to do this well with six children, and we’ve often been caught—but it’s always fun.)

Next—focus on the children.

4. Give Something Exciting

The reality is that our children DO want to get something exciting at Christmas. So, pick something great for them (within your budget) and help them enjoy it. A decision to not get anything can leave them feeling resentful, particularly when they see everyone else “getting.”

5. Reduce the Number of Gifts They Receive

Some children receive gifts from everyone. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, and even siblings are all expected to buy for everyone. This not only costs a fortune, but it can overwhelm children and leave them expecting more and more. Invite your extended family to contribute to one meaningful gift, rather than lots of bits and pieces.

6. When Opening Gifts, Take Time to Savour Them

Savouring is the magnifying, or amplifying, of a positive experience. When the children open a gift, give them time to savour it. Encourage them to play with it. Let them breathe in the excitement of the moment, rather than ripping into the next package and flinging their gifts aside.

7. Experiences Are Better Than Things

One of the most remarkable findings from positive psychology research is that spending money on experiences brings more happiness than spending money on “stuff.” Perhaps a family trip will be more memorable than more toys?

In a similar vein, gifts that encourage relationships are better than gifts that promote isolation. A new game console might be fun, but it may lead to withdrawal (and fights). It might be better to purchase some games that bring the family together.

8. Rather Than Gifts, Give Letters

One year for Christmas, I contacted my siblings and asked them to give me 10 memories of special times with Dad. With six children, we had a total of 60 memories, each written on separate pieces of coloured paper and rolled up into mini-scrolls and placed into a jar. Dad opened the jar and looked at us, perplexed. He reached in and pulled out the first note. He read it and chuckled. Then it dawned on him that there were 60 notes from his children. He dipped his hand in again and read. Then he began to weep. The rest of that Christmas morning, he read, cried, laughed, and reminisced. It was a meaningful, wonderful gift that cost nothing but meant the world.

9. Encourage the Children to Write “Thank You” Notes

Christmas break is a great time to take stock of gifts and say thank you. Invite your children to write thank you notes to those who gave to them, saying specifically why they’re grateful. Sincere thanks takes time—but it is a wonderful way to help the children show appreciation.

Finally, give the most valuable gift you can: time.

10. Give the Gift of Time

There may be no gift more appreciated by our children than your time. It costs so little yet is so hard to give generously. But when we give of our time generously, all the material desires our children have will fade away.

This Christmas, “unspoil” your child by reducing the emphasis on materialism, crowding out the crass commercialism of “getting” with sincere, compassionate giving. It can make your Christmas truly memorable.

2025 travel offers - For Country bus travellers via college exchange.

Families have been emailed travel offers from the Student Travel Assistance Portal for bus travel in 2025. Families have until 14 December 2024 to accept travel offers for 2025.

You are encouraged to

• review bus travel offers in the Student Travel Assistance Portal
  check all traveller details are correct
• if families have changed address or school and their travel offer is incorrect, they will need to decline their travel offer, update their address in their profile (if required) and then submit a new travel application
• accept offers prior to the expiry date.

Bus service waitlist

Where bus services have reached capacity, some students have been placed on a waitlist. The Student Transport Unit reviews the waitlist every day and when a seat becomes available, the system will automatically email a travel offer to families. Priority of access is given to eligible students.

“Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.”

The season of giving is just around the corner! This year, HTLC will be contributing to the Reverse Advent Calendar community project. The community is aiming to arrange hundreds of food hampers for the Christian Emergency Food Centre to share with disadvantaged families.

Junior School classes have been asked to contribute 1 or 2 boxes per class. Each box is to contain a specific list of items. We hope that families can contribute to the project by donating supplies from the list that has been sent out by classroom teachers. If families would like to contribute a box, lists of donation items can be found at the office. We ask that no glass is to be used in packaging. Please have donations at school before Friday 6th December.

Partners in Parenting program:

This program offers support and information in building your skills and confidence to help support a young person's mental health and their wellbeing. This is a Free online training for parents and carers of young people. Please find attached the Partners in Parenting flyer for more information.

In this online chat, headspace national will be discussing ways adults supporting young people can help support their young person during the challenging times of the holiday season. In this chat some of the things they will be focusing on include common worries, not so common worries, exploring pressures and stressors of social events. Please find the link below.

VCE STUDENT GRANTS | We are excited to announce that Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for VCE students who plan to study in the field of science, engineering, innovation or environment, to apply for a grant of $1,000 towards their university books.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get a positive head start in your academic journey.
