Wimmera Lutheran College Update

The end of Term has arrived and what an exciting period it has been for the Horsham, Nhill and Dimboola Campuses who have navigated the amalgamation to officially become Wimmera Lutheran College. There have been a number of important steps that have been taken to help form the new entity, some of which includes:

Learning Tour to Melbourne with 7 WLC Staff members from across the 3 campuses

WLC Website launch and Management System

The development of WLC will continue next term with the consultant to lead the Strategic Plan soon to be revealed before work on this begins. This will springboard into brand development and uniform discussions. There is much work still to be done but I have been energised by the amalgamation and are very much looking forward to the exciting next steps.

Easter and Holiday Blessings

As we prepare for School Holidays and the Easter long weekend, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a safe and relaxing holiday period. For those that are travelling, I pray that you do so safely and I look forward to welcoming everyone back for the beginning of Term 2.

Easter is always a special time of the year and it was great to be reminded of this by our Year 12 students who presented the Easter Journey with the Stations of the Cross located around the Horsham Campus grounds. The students did a wonderful job of recreating the significant events that led to Jesus’ death and resurrection and created space for reflection and thought. The Easter Play, which was directed by Mrs Hahn, was as equally powerful as it was moving as the students impactfully brought the emotions surrounding Jesus' crucifixion to life. To finish the evening with a shared worship service led by Pastor Hans, complete with Communion, was a fitting end to a special night. A huge thank you to College Chaplain Mrs Polack, Mr McKinnon, Mrs Carter, Mrs Hahn and Pastor Hans for contributing so significantly to the event and for guiding the students in their roles, it was a great celebration of the Easter Story.

Portfolios

Today, portfolios will be sent home, except for a few classes who are taking extra time to complete their work. These portfolios will be sent home by the end of Week 1 next term. This is a snapshot of your child/ren’s work that has been completed in the term. Please take the time to share in viewing this work, ascertaining whether this is their best effort. Concentrate on championing their schooling effort with growth comments that focus on the processes of learning like:

To all parents, we thank you for your involvement in your child/ren’s education this term. To those new to our community and those who have supported us for a length of time, we value that you put time into your role as co-educators. Doing school together is far more enjoyable than doing it on our own, even though it may be challenging at times, it is more rewarding that way!

Getting towards the end of the term, life at Wimmera Lutheran College – Horsham Campus certainly hasn’t slowed down with a name change! We have worked as busily as ever, ensuring that we can provide the best love, care and support for your children as we can. Thank you teachers, for the high level of service that you provide, not just for our students but their families also.

I often say that we have great kids and we would like to take all the credit for that as a college! But always I comment that we have great kids attending WLC - Horsham Campus, because we have great families. Students, you have done your families and your college proud this term. Crazy Hair Day next term

We have scheduled Friday 2 May (Week 2) to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation. If they want to, over the holidays, students can think and plan what funky things they may be able to do with their hair for this great day.

Canteen next term – Monday, Wednesday and Friday

It is exciting to know that next term, the Fig Tree Café has been contracted to provide a lunch order service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We thank college parents Hollie and Bronson Durack (who are proprietors of this business) for including us in their business plans! Please read the details as they come to hand.

Mr Borgas on Long Service Leave for Term 2

I am looking forward to taking Term 2 as long service leave. It has been a pretty busy start to the year and sometimes identifying that need for a break to re-energise springs up on you more than not! I know the term will proceed like any other term, as the Junior School team here at WLC - Horsham Campus effectively and efficiently continue to go about the work with the same love and care for students and families as in Term 1. Necia and I have booked a holiday together, but I am also looking forward to footy umpiring and continuing to be at the Lutheran church and in the local community over the term.

Easter Paradox

A puzzle, an enigma, an absurdity. This is what, on the surface, a paradox is. Christians seem to celebrate a death, but we don’t celebrate death in this life?

At a deeper look, a paradox is a statement or situation that seems to contradict itself but actually reveals a deeper truth. Easter is one such example. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Jesus lives! Easter is not about life or death, but life and death! Jesus rising from the dead reveals the true relationship of life and death to us in this world. After death, there is life, hope for the world! Our Grampians are a great example of that, as yet again, green growth rises from the ashes. So it makes us think, is death real, or something like a gateway to life?

Blessings as you ponder the end of Jesus at Easter, and his new beginning also! Safe travels as you experience a change in routine and I look forward to having everyone back in Term 2!

As the term comes to a close, it is a great time to reflect on the many experiences and opportunities that have taken place. Schools are always vibrant and bustling with activity, and this term has been no exception.

Year 7 Camp

We were delighted to hold the Year 7 Orientation Camp in Week 9. Students enjoyed a range of activities designed to help them build a sense of community. Held at Tandara Lutheran Camp in Halls Gap, the camp featured ropes courses, swimming at the pool, and, of course, a visit to the ice cream shop. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Engert and her team of staff for making this a memorable experience for our students.

VCE OES Camp

The VCE Outdoor & Environmental Studies class participated in a four-day camp across Gunditjmara Country in the Glenelg Shire. Activities included surfing, snorkeling, hiking, abseiling, and more. Students were encouraged to explore their recreational relationship with the environment and to appreciate conservation efforts by engaging in soil and water testing. It was an inspiring and enriching experience for all involved. Thank you to Mr Prouse for his organisation of this camp.

Upcoming College Ball

We are excited for the upcoming College Ball, which will take place in Week 2 next term. Rehearsals are well underway, and we thank the dance teachers and Miss Cashin for their hard work so far. The parent group has been meeting and planning, and there will be several rehearsals over the next few weeks. We wish everyone well as they prepare. This event is shaping up to be a wonderful celebration for the College community and a highlight of the year.

Easter Journey

Thank you to Mrs Polack, Mr McKinnon and the Year 12 students for presenting the Easter Journey to the Wimmera Lutheran College community. On Thursday night, those in attendance were invited to reflect on the meaning of Easter as they moved through a series of stations, each representing different elements of the Easter story. The evening concluded with Holy Communion, led by Pastor Hans. It was a wonderful time of meaningful reflection.

WLC Athletics

Well done to all involved in the Junior School Athletics last week. It was great to have Year 9 students coordinating events at the 3-6 day and Year 6 students assisting staff at the F-2 day. Greater Western Region Swimming

Last Wednesday, 18 students from WLC Horsham competed in the Greater Western Region Swimming Finals at the Horsham Aquatic Centre. The competition was incredibly strong, with a number of skilled swimmers travelling from 44 different schools across the region. Out of all the schools involved, Wimmera Lutheran College finished fifth, with our students producing an impressive haul of results.

Congratulations to Ellua for winning the 200 freestyle and earning a place at the State Finals on Thursday, 1 May.

GWR Swimming 2025 — Stella M, Hannah G & Ellua B

AHPVSS Round 1 - Mount Gambier

The first race of the 2025 Australian HPV Super Series took place in Mount Gambier on Saturday, with 36 WLC students, staff and alumni competing across five categories. For the most part, the weather was pleasant and the trikes were fast, except for a nasty patch of showers in the last hour of the eight-hour event. As the chequered flag flew, the teams from Holy Trinity Racing had completed an impressive 1209.6 km, with all of our trikes individually covering at least the distance from WLC to Beaufort.

Across the board, we had 16 first-time competitors join the ranks this season, and despite trike racing being a new experience for many of the students, they didn’t let it show on the circuit. The 2.4 km track at McNamara Park features a couple of tricky sections, but all the students did an impressive job of navigating it and the 88 other trikes on course.

Jaxon E completed a lap in an impressive 3:31, the fastest ever time by a HTR primary school student in our 9 years competing at Mount Gambier. Ryan S took out the honours of having the fastest lap for an HTR student on the day, completing the circuit in 3:15, at an average speed of 44.2 km/h. Charlize vZ was the fastest HTR girl on the day, completing her best lap in 3:55 (36.7 km/h average).

Every team from HTR finished on the podium, which was a fantastic way to start the season, and leaves this event as one of our most successful of all time.

Thanks to all the parents that assisted in the pit area on the day, or with marshalling at the event or transporting the trikes and trailer to and from the event. A program of this scale can’t be run without support, and we appreciate all the volunteer hours that people have put into the program so far in 2025.

WLC Horsham Year 7 - 12 Athletics 2025

On Monday, we were greeted at Dudley Cornell Park by blue skies and blustery winds as students from Lowan, Mallee and Wimmera were given the opportunity to compete for House Points at the Secondary Athletics Carnival. Students participated in a range of events over the course of the day, and when all was said and done, it was Wimmera who emerged victorious with a score of 1639 points, ahead of Mallee’s 1336 and Lowan’s 1268.

Congratulations to Jed P, who won the WLC Gift this year against a very talented field of runners. Jed took home a $50 gift voucher for Intersport Horsham. Thanks to Intersport for their continued support of this event at our Athletics Day. Additionally, I’d like to thank all the teachers, parent volunteers and other staff that assisted in the smooth running of the carnival.

Greater Western Region Intermediate Volleyball

On Tuesday, the Horsham Basketball Stadium was again a hive of activity as teams from Warrnambool, Daylesford and the Wimmera region competed in the Greater Western Region Intermediate Volleyball Finals.

The girls team had a shaky start to their first set, but quickly found form. They won both games in convincing fashion to earn a place in the state finals. Some players will be attending for the third year in a row.

Congratulations to Victoria B, Kirrily D, Hannah G, Bonnie G, Myah M, Maya P, Amelia vB and Ilze vZ – best of luck at State Finals on May 14!

The boys had a tense and hard-fought day. Despite a narrow loss on points percentage, they showed determination and grit. Well done to Noah E, Jesse J, Chase K, Jack K, Shaun L, Tarren M, Rhylee O, Will P and Malakai vB.
